Three crooks hold-up a Mob bank in Harlem - they come away with $300,000, but the heist goes awry and results in the death of both Black and Italian gangsters, as well as two police officers. The massacre is the catalyst for all out war on the streets of New York, as all three elements - the Black and Italian mobs, and the police - jockey to regain control of their territory and to find the culprits. Assigned to the case for the police are police veteran Captain Matelli (Anthony Quinn - Lawrence of Arabia, La Strada), a bigot prone to violent outbursts, and Lt. Pope (Yaphet Kotto - Alien, Midnight Run), a less experienced Black detective assigned to the case for ‘political reasons’.
